Managing Talent in a Turbulent Economy: Keeping your team intact

http://www.deloitte.com/view/en_US/us/Services/additional-services/Talent-Human-Capital-HR/article/882be382ed8c3210VgnVCM100000ba42f00aRCRD.htm?id=email_talent_ps_1109

Managing Talent in a Turbulent Economy: Keeping your team intact A Special Report on Talent Retention

Publish date: Thursday, September 17, 2009

Deloitte’s “Managing Talent in a Turbulent Economy: Keeping your team intact for the recovery” report confirms the possibility of a “resume tsunami” as the economy begins to show signs of recovery. This Special Report on Talent Retention—part of an ongoing longitudinal survey by Deloitte—compares the results of an August 2009 survey of employees at large enterprises worldwide with a May 2009 survey of international corporate leaders.

This Special Report reveals a number of critical differences between what employees reported they want and what surveyed executives think their employees want. These disparities display a “tale of two mindsets” between employee desires and employer priorities. In order to prepare for the recovery, many companies will need to assess the turnover intentions of their key employees and revise the retention tactics they employ to keep top talent on the job.

Corporate leaders looking to head off a potential “resume tsunami” have a number of tools at their disposal, not all of which are financial. Executives and talent managers must honestly answer a number of important questions: Can strong leadership be used more effectively as a retention tool? Can improved communication over necessary cost-cutting measures alleviate anxiety and reduce turnover intentions? Can career advancement paths be cleared to keep top talent satisfied? Are managers giving employees the support and recognition necessary to keep them committed to their current jobs?

Read the Special Report on Talent Retention to learn more about ways effective companies can manage the “tale of two mindsets” by first understanding what their employees really want and then realigning their retention strategies, tactics and priorities to match those goals. We believe those that succeed will be better positioned to retain their high performing and high potential employees and be able to hit the ground running as the economy recovers.

This Special Report is part of Deloitte’s year-long longitudinal study of talent trends and retention strategies. The fourth edition of Deloitte’s longitudinal survey will be published in November 2009. Deloitte also plans to publish a fifth edition in January 2010 in order to complete a year-long study designed to track talent trends and attitudes through the depth of the recession and into the first hints of economic recovery.

As used in this document, “Deloitte” means Deloitte Consulting LLP, a subsidiary of Deloitte LLP. Please see www.deloitte.com/us/about for a detailed description of the legal structure of Deloitte LLP and its subsidiaries.

70% of respondents indicated that the SEC should approve its proposed IFRS Roadmap either “as is” or by pushing back the proposed mandatory deadline by a year.

Recent statements from the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) chairperson and new chief accountant suggest that IFRS is returning as a front burner issue. And many financial executives are showing support for decisive SEC action in approving its proposed IFRS roadmap, according to a new Deloitte survey. Seventy percent (70%) of respondents indicated that the SEC should approve its proposed roadmap or a modified version of it. Specifically, fifty-one percent (51%) responded that the SEC should approve the proposed roadmap, but consider pushing back the mandatory deadline by a year, and 19% responded that the SEC should approve its proposed roadmap “as is.”

The Deloitte survey, with over 150 financial executives participating, was conducted in September 2009 to gather data and information on the latest IFRS trends, views, and assessment activities.

Highlights of the survey results include:

Seventy percent (70%) of respondents indicated approval for the SEC’s proposed roadmap: 51% responded that the SEC should approve the proposed roadmap, but consider pushing back the mandatory deadline a year; and 19% responded that the SEC should approve its proposed roadmap “as is.”
Forty-five percent (45%) of respondents selected “delay in the finalization of the SEC’s roadmap” in characterizing the reason why their companies’ IFRS assessment plans may have been delayed. Only 9% of respondents identified “economic challenges or constraints” as the reason for delaying an IFRS assessment.
Thirty-four percent (34%) of survey participants indicated IFRS adoption would make the U.S. more competitive in the global marketplace, while 38% responded that IFRS adoption would not.

Data Show Industry Employment Edging Up

Data Show Industry Employment Edging Up

http://www.americanstaffing.net/statistics/staffing_index.cfm

Since the beginning of July, the ASA Staffing Index has increased 15.7%, suggesting that temporary and contract employment is recovering from the weakened demand for staffing services triggered by the recent economic recession.

From December 2008 to January 2009, temporary and contract employment experienced the largest one-month decline recorded since the inception of the index in June 2006. Staffing industry employment during the first half of this year was then mostly flat until July, when an overall trend of steady growth began to emerge. The index, which began the year at 69, is currently at 81, indicating that industry employment has increased 17.4% since January.

Recent research released by ASA member company Yoh provides further evidence that staffing employment is headed for a recovery. According to the Yoh Index of Technology Wages, which measures changes in employer demand and supply of U.S. technology workers, wages remained consistent and trended slightly upward during the first half of 2009. Lori Schultz of Yoh says, "The continued demand for highly specialized technical workers, paired with the stability in associated wages, leads us to be cautiously optimistic that economic restoration is in progress."

The ASA Staffing Index, which estimates weekly changes in the number of people employed in temporary and contract work, was developed to provide a current measure of staffing industry employment trends. To learn how your company can participate in the ASA Staffing Index survey, visit americanstaffing.net.

Accounting Firms' Economic Health Detailed

Pessimism Among CPAs Eases

Economic confidence among corporate CFOs rebounded last quarter to a point where they're gearing up to spend more on staffing and capital investment, a new survey indicates.

The third-quarter "CFO Outlook Survey" conducted by Financial Executives International (FEI) and Baruch College's Zicklin School of Business shows many of the 262 executives surveyed during early September held a heightened sense of confidence toward the U.S. economy and their own companies.

"Over the next 12 months, CFOs expect increases in technology spending, as well as the first uptick in hiring and capital spending reported in four quarters," FEI says.

A majority of respondents (58 percent) cited headcount reductions as one of the most effective actions in response to the downturn. Interestingly, 22 percent mentioned "retention of talent," making that the second-most popular response.

The CFO optimism index for the U.S. economy came in a 54.2, its highest since March 2008, and up from 41.9 in the second quarter. A gauge of how CFOs see their own companies' prospects jumped to 64.10 from an all-time low 51.44 three months ago.

Still, many are still hesitant to declare that the recession is at or near an end. Forty percent of those surveyed expect recovery to begin in the second half of 2010, and another 22 percent don't expect a recovery until 2011 or even later. Only 10 percent believe the U.S. economy is already in recovery.

CFOs also expressed concern over rising health care costs and the national debate over health care reform. Most expect to pass higher costs along to their employees.

This is a Great Time to Start Your Job Search!
Published on September 9, 2009 by Guest Author
By Mary-Helen Giles.
If you are one of many local Katy residents looking for a new job or just thinking of making a change, things are finally starting to look up! Recent statistics show that the rate of unemployment is starting to trend downward and layoffs are slowing down. In addition, the use of temporary help across the Gulf Coast region is increasing. In past recoveries, this is often the first indicator that the economic situation is improving. In fact, recent conversations with hiring managers in the Greater Houston area have given us even greater reason for hope: budgets being prepared now for 2010 actually allow for addition of permanent staff in several key areas.

So how can you take advantage of this situation? Now is the time to dust off that old resume, take your interview suit to the cleaners and start networking. The first step in this process is to contact anyone you plan to use as a reference in your job search. Let them know that you are looking for a new position and ask them if they will provide a reference for you. Confirm that you have all of their current contact information, including address, phone number and email address. Many employers will run detailed background checks on new hires, so make sure that all of the information on your resume is correct (especially dates) and that your education information can be verified. In other words, if you still owe an old library fine to your alma mater, now is the time to pay it so they will confirm your degree! Depending on the type of job you are seeking, it may also be a good time to double check your credit report to make sure all of the information is correct.

The next step in the process is to network, network, and network some more! Let your friends and neighbors know that you are looking. Attend meetings of professional organizations in your field. If you are between jobs, visit organizations like Between Jobs Ministries and get to know the other people there. The keys to successful networking throughout your career are to have a great attitude and to always try to provide something of value to the people you meet. This could be an introduction, a lead or just valuable information. Another hot trend now is social networking. Make sure you are familiar with the professional sites such as LinkedIn and confirm that all of your information is correct and has a professional appearance. If you have a webpage on a site like MySpace that anyone can view, make sure that you don’t have anything you don’t want a potential employer to view on your page.

If you are currently unemployed, one great way to increase your visibility in the marketplace and improve your network is by doing temporary work. There are many great organizations in the area to help you find your next temporary position. Be flexible on your assignment and do your best work. Treat the temporary role like a permanent position and the experience can open many new doors in your career. For example, even if the department you are working in does not have an opening, there may be one in another area of the company or even with a completely different company that the manager knows well. You may also gain valuable new industry experience in the process. Just remember to give notice as you would with any permanent position once you decide to leave. You will want to keep this manager as a reference!

If you are employed and are considering changing companies, a recruiter that specializes in your field can also be very helpful. Recruiters often have access to positions that are confidential or are even still in the works with their client company. Do your research, ask questions and make sure that you are comfortable with the recruiter that is going to represent you. Once you have chosen a recruiter you like, be open with your recruiter about your goals for your career, your target salary and what type of role you desire. The more information they have from you, the better match they will be able to make for you.

Get ready now because all of the market indicators are that things are turning around in the Greater Houston area! Be flexible. This is a great time to start your job search for a new position. Good luck!
